Misty Glen Farms: Laura and Drew

Now to put words into my feelings that are from the depth of my heart. This is my little sister and her fiance Drew. Yes, my little sister is getting married this May at my parent’s farm in Maryland. I will not only have the honor to stand up front with her on their wedding day, but to also photograph it. The feelings that rise in my heart as I type and share this honor brings tears of happiness. You see I adore my little sister and love her dearly. She is my best friend, the one I call on a bad day, the one I cry with and the first one I call to share good news too. She is my fashion stylist making sure I am not wearing black and always pushing me to try a new color. Over the years the Lord has sweeten our relationship by his grace. I was not the older nicest sister growing up and I missed out on years of her life. I am so thankful that our relationship has grown into one of the most honest, real, and genuine love for one another. She is always there for me, listening, asking how I am doing, and praying for me. Distance does not affect our ability to connect and care for one. We have walked through valleys and trials together when words could not give explanations. Through those times Laura is a faithful friend. We also have experienced many joys together.

One of the greatest joys of having a sister is getting to hear the first mention of a possible interest. And so it was with Drew. This time sparks were rekindled at a weekend with friends up in the Mountains in CO. Drew pursued Laura. And Laura wanted to be pursued by Drew. Over the last year their love for one another grew deep. Deep in the way of loving someone for who they really all. Laura admitted that it always came back to Drew. Drew was not going anywhere and had a plan to make Laura his wife! Drew called Laura’s father to ask his permission to marry her and about an hour after waiting to have the conversation our father gave him his blessings. Drew proposed a few days after Thanksgiving. I loved that Drew’s desire was for Laura to be home for the holiday engaged. He was thinking ahead and thinking of her.

We all descend to my parents home for Christmas and it was a time to celebrate Laura and Drew. The plan was to take one picture for Save the Date cards and well…I kept photographing them. This is the result; many images that I love of their love and happiness together!! Laura and Drew’s love for one another is evident. I have not seen her happier and this makes my heart full. I can not wait for them to become husband and wife come May! Laura and Drew thank you for allowing me to capture you two! And one other thing that my sister does is occasionally check and proof my blog post as words are often out of order or completely left out. She did not proof this post so its all me! ENJOY!!!

Baby Simon

There are some friendships in life that you get to walk through many seasons together. Josh and Molly are one of them. I first met Molly at college, then we rented a  house together in the city before each of us got married, and I had the privilege to be in her and Josh’s wedding. These two are faithful friends. I would have never imagined eleven years ago that I would have the honor to photograph their first baby. Meet Simon. He is the cutest! Really, I can not lie!

I know that I do not usually photograph babies or families; however I was happy (more then happy) that Molly asked me to take one family picture of the three of them. We headed outside for their one family picture. Simon was all snuggled up, asleep in a blanket made by Molly and a hat to keep him warm. Of course Sophie their Newfoundland joined us too. She expressed her love to Simon in kisses! And then when we headed inside.  Finished right? If, you know that I can not take just one photo! And I am thankful that they said I could take some more of Simon as his bright eyes, smile and their love for him was captured!

Josh and Molly adore Simon and it is so evident in they way they care and love him. They are such natural parents who were so relaxed as I kept taking photos of their everyday moments. These are the moments that I know that I cherish looking back. These moments included the framed art that was drawn special for his room, diaper changes, special blankets and of course little toes, baby yawn, mommy’s hugs and daddy’s kisses. Thank you again Josh and Molly for allowing me to capture your son! I loved spending the morning with you three. Simon is the sweetest and I know a little girl who can not wait for him to be running around with her. ENJOY!!!

Losing Fear

As I began to shooting weddings I shoot primarily with the one lens, my 50mm 1.2. Slowly over time I become aware with the limits of a 50 mm, and would evaluate what lens to purchase next. And my bag grew. In 2011 was at the point when I evaluated my desire for a tighter shot of the bride and groom during the ceremony. I read blogs and listen to other photographer’s suggestions of when they used a lens and why. I was thankful for their wisdom and open advice. As I evaluated there were two options that I considered: the 135mm L 2.0 or the 70-200mm L 2.8. I like to talk out loud my thought process and decisions and share what I read, and also question what would work best for me and my shooting style. I concluded to purchase the 135mm 2.0 leaning heavily on its lower aperture and size to make the final decision. Other words I read basically suggested that 70-200mm was the one lens they would have to shoot a wedding. Though I moved forward with the 135mm these words stayed in the back of my mind.

After shooting with the 135mm 2.0 for a year I began to feel its limits, especially during the ceremony. For instance if I was shooting up front during the ceremony and could not zoom or move backward I would run out of space as the bride reach the front of the church, or if I wanted a tighter shot of the bride’s reaction to the groom saying his vows to her. Those are just two examples. The 135mm was close; but not close enough. After talking about purchasing 70-200mm again, I realized what held me back the first time. Fear. Fear of trying something new. Shooting a zoom lens and its size! My first conversation was filled with reservation and I should have known that fear was lurking. Fear wants to hold you back. I’m learning how to identify my fear, look at it objectively and face it with a plan. A plan seems to make all things better.

I let fear keep me back from trying something new that would add depth and a new closeness in the photographs I captured. I am happy to say that I am thankful for facing the fear last year. I have loved the ceremony moments captured by the 70-200mm. I hope this encourages you to lose fear. Try something new this year and do not let fear hold you back. ENJOY!

Ring Shots

It’s been a little quite over here lately on the blog as my time has been spent getting back into our new kitchen. Friday night I caught myself heading for the upstairs bathroom with a dirty dish in my hand. I am happy to say that we have running water and a sink again and we are really almost done with the construction!! Now onto prettier things…rings!

One of my goals for 2012 was photographing wedding rings with clarity, closeness, and creatively. Rings are important. They are a classic symbol of love, marriage and commitment. Rings are also an expression of each person. I wanted to capture this detail for each of my client to reflect who they are. Here are some of my thoughts about photographing rings. I want first say that I learned much from Katelyn James and Jasmine Star about ring shots.

First it’s practice. Practice, Practice, Practice. I photograph the rings with Canon 100mm L 2.8. I would take my rings and practice. I practiced inside and outside. I would walk around the yard and look for places to set up my rings. I would find objects inside to set my ring on to practice. Close up and a step away. You can practice really with any type of jewelry. Look at your settings; see what worked and what did not work.

Second, find the best light given each situation. I would look at the direction of the light when shooting outside. When I photograph rings inside I would work by a window with the natural light. One tip when shooting indoors is to turn off all other sources of light. When it is possible, work with only one light source. This helps with white balance of each image.

Thirdly, I turn the camera’s beep on. This has helped me know that the ring is locked in focused. You can find this under the menu of your camera.

And lastly I wanted to capture the rings in a setting that reflected their engagement session and wedding day. I begin to think about each bride’s details, colors, things that they love. My goal was then to incorporate their rings and other pieces of jewelry into each photograph to tell a consistent and cohesive story of them. These shots now have become one of my favorite detail shots to photograph!

Please share any tips you have for shooting rings and details! I love details…I hope this helps someone love to shoot details and rings too!

Below is my first ring shot using flash and I loved how they turned out!

My favorite is still the cupcake shot : ) Love it!

2012 rewind

Reminiscing. One of my favorite things to do at the end of each year. I get lost going through photographs. One by one, month by month. Photographs are pieces of memories and experience created throughout the year. I have had the honor to shoot eight weddings, engagement sessions, maternity, two newborns, families, anniversary session, rehearsal dinner, attend one workshop, and interiors. Each time I pick up my camera to capture a couple and family my desire is to create images that reflect who they are, their love and tell their story. I feel the same way when I capture the beauty in each interior that is designed, coordinated with colors and layered with textures. Each of us has a story and I am honored that I was able to photograph so many this year. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives. I feel so thankful for the trust and the privilege to tell your story! My heart is full. Many thanks for a wonderful full 2012 and many hopes and dreams for 2013! ENJOY!!!
