My first lens

Over the last several months I have had inquiries about what camera and lenses to purchase. I know that everyone is different and has different styles and taste in photography. There is no one camera fits all. So, what I do is ask questions. Whenever I go to my dad for business advice or questions he starts with asking questions. I have learned this is helpful for me to define what I really want. Here are some of my questions: What will you primarily shoot with your camera?…(kids, landscapes, outdoors, indoors, weddings, food, the soccer team). You get the idea. What is important to you in a camera and lens? (how many mega pixels, the cost, zoom abilities, blurry backgrounds). And of course what is your budget?

Yesterday I shared that my first lens was the 85mm 1.8 and that I would not recommend investing in this as your first lens. I’m am not claiming to be an expert of what is the best lens to buy; however I have some recommendations if you are looking to invest. Here is the process I went though that ended in purchasing the 85mm. I started with the kit lens and within a short period of time I became frustrated with my images. Where was all the blurriness? My pictures lack of blurriness (bokeh) that I loved in other photographers work. At first it was a mystery to me how they achieved the bokeh. I quickly learned that bokeh had everything to do with aperture. The kit lens would never allow me to create bokeh in the background. In order to achieve the look that I desired I would need a lens with a lower aperture. I did some research on the web about lenses and decided I wanted the 85mm 1.8. I would still claim that this lens was what made me fall in love with photography because it achieve what had become the most important to me in images: bokeh. Quickly, after shooting with the 85mm I realized that I was backing up and often running out of space when shooting indoors. I was often standing many feet away from the person I was photographing. I realized that I wanted to be closer then feel like I was yelling.  At the time of purchasing the 85mm, I had very little understanding of focal lengths and how the focal lengths were affected on my Canon 40d. This is important and I overlooked it. I want to be clear that I do love the 85mm; however just not as my first lens option mainly due to the reasons listed above as well as the price.

Here is my recommendation: practice shooting at different focal lengths on your kit lens. Not for a couple of shots but for a whole day or week. One week shoot at 50mm and another at 35mm and another 85mm. Compare your photos. Look at them and see what you like. Maybe you will realize you like the zoom ability rather then moving yourself when you shoot with a prime lens (one set focal length). Take your time to discover what is important to you in a picture. If it is the bokeh, then you know that you need a lens with a low aperture. The other option which I would recommend is to also rent a lens before you purchase it. This way you can test out a lens to make sure you love it!! It is an investment. There are several companies that you can rent lenses from. Borrow Lenses has high recommendations. And my last recommendation is if you want blurry backgrounds at a very reasonable cost then invest in the Canon 50mm 1.8. It is truly a great lens for the price. I hope this is helpful for one person and if you have any questions feel free to ask!

I went back through old images to find ones shot with my 85mm 1.8.

In order to get the space around Myla I was many feet away from her.

I wanted the space to show how small she was at one year old.The 85mm is great for portraits and for blurry backgrounds!!Again with a prime lens I was the one having to move to get close shots and then back up for more space.

With the low aperture of the 85mm, I felt like I could tell a story by focusing on a detail.

What’s In My Bag?

As I began my photography journey you know that I had no clue about any piece of camera bodies or lenses that were out on the market. I was shooting film with my Nikon and shooting with a digital point and shoot. It was my husband who handed me a Canon 40d camera body with the kit lens and a 10-22mm lens back in 2009. The kit lens was the primary lens  that stayed on the camera body and the 10-22mm was to be used to shoot interiors. It was not my plan or initial goal to start a business; however as God moved me in this direction my understanding of camera bodies (full frame) and lenses (wanting a low aperture) also grew.  Early on I was wisely told to invest in lenses (they come with you!) and was so thankful for this advice! So here I am three years later and here is what is in my bag!

My go to lens. 50mm 1.2. This was my first “L” series lenses. The “L” means professional in canon’s world.

This was best Valentine’s Day present to date! I really have an amazing husband!!

The 35mm 1.4. I wanted something wider then the 50mm without distortions. I love the 35mm.

The 85mm 1.2 is my most recent purchase of prime lenses and it has quickly become a favorite!

These three are my favorite lenses to shoot with hands down! I love prime lenses!!

I use this lens during the ceremony. I love that the aperture is a 2.0 and works well in low lighting settings.

This lens has replaced my 10-22mm for interior shooting. This is my only zoom lens.

I also use this for bridal party formals or large groups! This lens captures all the bling and delicate details too!

I have two Canon 5d Markii camera bodies. One I shoot with and one for back up.

I also shoot with my Holga on wedding days. I love the 5×5 square images it produces on film. Here is my first camera…my 40d. I use this as my back up to my back up. It is not getting that much use any more!

85mm 1.8 was my first lens with a low aperture. It is called a portrait lens.

I loved it for the blurry backgrounds I was able to achieve, though it would not be the first lens I would recommend investing in.

The 10-22mm is not really as wide as the numbers suggest because of the cropped senor on the 40d.I started with the 430 speedlite and upgraded to the 580 speedlite. It was the upgrade! You will also find memory cards, rechargeable batteries, back up batteries, and my lenspen for cleaning my lenses.

And I forgot to add in my burt’s bee chap-stick.

Most of my lenses and accessories have been purchased from B&H photo and my camera bodies through Lee’s Camera Center here locally.

I love prime lenses too. I have the 50mm 1.4 and 35mm 1.8 and love them both. Still need a nice wide angle though, similar for yours for cityscapes, large groups, and landscapes though. That and an upgrade to a full-frame camera! :)

But you didn’t show us your bag! What do you use to store all that in? 😉

Instagrams

In the beginning of March I was still waiting for winter to hit and to have at least one snowy day home bound. I was not ready for spring as winter projects were still on the list to do. . .sew curtains, pick fabric for myla’s window seat, buy frames, pick paint and redo the office, create a sample album, make workflow charts, and order more dining room chairs. Some of these projects got tackled and some got added with the surprising warm weather we had like rake the yard, edge/weed the gardens and hopefully mulch this weekend! Other projects like redo the office got moved until June, though I think we got a paint color chosen. We did reorder more dining room chairs, but the color did not match the ones we had, so they went back! I am OK that I will have to wait until winter for my next snowy day.  I’m thankful that spring has arrived for two reasons: warmer weather and more light at night!! Here are some Instagrams from this month. Happy Friday!!!
